Smokey Point PTA Celebrates 10 Years with NorthSound PT

Please join us in congratulating Dan McBride on recently celebrating his 10th year with NorthSound Physical Therapy. He is currently a PTA at the Smokey Point clinic.

Dan has worked at all five of NorthSound clinics since he joined the team. He is inspired daily by his mentors and co-workes over the years including Marty Stanton, Tony Johns, and Tracy Hartley. Dan explained, “They have taught me how to be the best physical therapy assistant that I can be and treat the patient as a whole”. Dan is also thankful of the support from his wife and daughter, and appreciates each and every patient that he has had the pleasure to work with over the years.

Dan has also recently started the Aquatic Therapy program back up at the Stillaguamish Athletic Club in Arlington on Tuesdays, and finds it to be an enjoyable challenge.

The entire team at NorthSound Physical Therapy greatly appreciates the tremendous work and infectious personality that Dan brings to the company. Thank you for the past 10 years, and hopefully many more years to come.

Workplace Wellness

Posted on:

Working at a computer work station all day can take a toll on the body. Repetitive activities and lack of mobility can contribute to aches, pains, and eventual injuries.

Sitting at a desk while using the keyboard for hours on a day to day basis can result in poor circulation to joints and muscles, it can also create an imbalance in strength and flexibility of certain muscles, and muscle strain. These issues can be easily remedied by taking frequent short breaks, or “micro breaks,” throughout your day.

-Get out of your chair several times a day and move around-even for 30 seconds

-Roll your shoulders backwardsTurn your head side to side

-Stretch out your forearms and your legs

-Additionally, specific guidelines for your work station can help maximize your comfort and safety.

Back-Saving Holiday Tips

Posted on:

For many of us, shopping during the holiday season can be equivalent to a major sporting activity. During the holiday season braving the busy malls and stores is a true test of endurance, mental stamina and physical strength.

“The added demands of the holidays stresses the body, which may increase the risk of injuries related to the extra activities,” says APTA spokesperson and physical therapist E. Anne Reicherter, PT, DPT, PhD. She advises: “Using proper body mechanics can help prevent muscle and joint discomfort this holiday season.” As the holiday clock counts down, here are some tips from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to make last-minute gift hunting easier.

Shopping Without Dropping

-Distribute the weight of shopping bags equally on both sides of your body.

-Consider carrying a small backpack rather than a heavy purse.

-Wear comfortable shoes; carrying packages while wearing high heels on hard surfaces can contribute to foot and ankle injuries.

-Don’t carry overstuffed shopping bags for extended periods.

-Consider using a shopping cart or getting help to carry packages to your car.

-Make frequent trips to the car to drop off purchases.

-Avoid prime shopping times to decrease wait times that can increase or exceed standing/walking time tolerances.

-Plan your shopping trip ahead of time. Having a set list of gifts you intend to buy will help you plan for extra help, if needed, to carry purchases.

Before You Lift

-Test an object’s weight before attempting to lift heavy packages or luggage. Try pushing it with your foot. If it seems too heavy then take smaller loads, which are less likely to strain your back and are easier on arm and shoulder muscles.

-Keep the load close to your body when lifting.

-Ask for help or use an assistive device to lift heavy objects.

-Seek help from a physical therapist if your back pain lasts more than a few days or gets worse.

Stretching

Posted on:

Everyone can learn to stretch, regardless of age or flexibility. Stretching should be a part of your daily routine, whether you exercise or not. There are simple stretches you can do whiile watching TV, on the computer, or getting ready for bed. If you are doing strength training exercises, stretch in between sets. It feels good and saves time from stretching at the end of the workout!

It does not have to involve a huge time commitment, but stretching can end up giving you a huge results! Here are just a few of the benefits you can expect from a regular stretching program:

-Reduced muscle tension

-Increased range of movement in the joints

-Enhanced muscular coordination

-Increased circulation of the blood to various parts of the body

-Increased energy levels ( resulting from increased circulation)

Stretching is important for people of all ages! One of the greatest benefits of stretching is that you’re able to increase your range of motion, which means your limbs and joints can move further before an injury occurs. Post-exercise stretching can also aid in workout recovery, decrease muscle soreness, and ensure that your muscles and tendons are in good working order. The more conditioned your muscles and tendons are, the better they can handle the rigors of sport and exercise, and the less likely that they’ll become injured.
